A world without nuclear weapons: join the campaign

The Liberal government has abandoned Canada’s traditional leadership role in the movement to abolish nuclear weapons.

We call on the Liberal government to:

(a) recognize the catastrophic humanitarian consequences that would result from any use of nuclear weapons;

(b) recall the unanimous vote in both Houses of Parliament in 2010 that called on Canada to participate in negotiations for a nuclear weapons convention;

(c) immediately sign and ratify the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, adopted in July 2017, and commit to attend future meetings of the United Nations conference to negotiate a legally binding instrument to prohibit nuclear weapons, leading towards their total elimination;

(d) assume a leadership role within NATO to develop a clear and timely path to the reduction and abolition of nuclear weapons in accordance with NATO’s recommitment “to creating the conditions for a world without nuclear weapons” expressed at the 2016 Warsaw Summit.
