GARRISON COMMENTS ON BILL C-32 TO AMEND CIVIL MARRIAGE ACT

VICTORIA – Today the government introduced Bill C-32 to amend the Civil Marriage Act in order to ensure that all marriages performed in Canada are valid for purposes of Canadian law.

“I am happy to see this legislation, which will remove any doubt about the validity of equal marriage for same-sex couples,” said Randall Garrison (Esquimalt-Juan de Fuca).  “This is a very technical piece of legislation and now we will be taking time to review the government’s proposed bill to make sure it guarantees fairness for all couples married in Canada,” Garrison continued.

There have been about 15,000 same-sex marriages in Canada since 2003.  An estimated 5,000 of those marriages involved non-residents.
