VICTORIA – Today the Conservative dominated Transportation Committee voted down an opportunity to support funding to get the E&N railway up and running once again.  The Committee voted down a request for funding rail infrastructure.

Randall Garrison (Esquimalt – Juan de Fuca) attended the Transport Committee meeting today to argue the case for the much needed funding.  “Federal funding
to match the already committed $7.5 million dollar provincial commitment is vital to allow us to get going on getting the E&N up and running as soon as possible.  Having a functioning E & N is vital to helping alleviate commuter problems on the lower island, particularly with hundreds of new jobs coming at Esquimalt Dockyards.  We need the E&N running so we can help these shipbuilders get to work” said Garrison.

Garrison went on to urge Transportation Minister Denis Lebel to include the funding in the upcoming federal budget.  “My hope is that the Minister will finally approve the $7.5 million required to get the E&N up and running once again as our community has now waited eight months for the funding” he continued.

The Island Corridor Foundation has been building a framework for the E&N to return as a transportation option for tourism, commuting and freight hauling on Vancouver Island.
