MP GARRISON SIGNS UN TREATY ON PROHIBITION OF NUCLEAR WEAPONS, DEMANDS LIBERAL GOVERNMENT SHOW LEADERSHIP

VICTORIA- Randall Garrison, NDP National Defence Critic and Vice-Chair of the Standing Committee on National Defence, signed the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons at a public event in Esquimalt on Friday, April 13th. In an effort to demonstrate his conviction that Canada can and must take a leadership role in the movement for nuclear disarmament, Randall Garrison signed the treaty, despite the Liberal Government’s decision to not only not sign the treaty but to abstain even from the negotiation process of this historic, legally-binding document. Over one-hundred local residents, alarmed by the fact that the Bulletin of Atomic Science has rated our risk for catastrophic nuclear war higher than it has been since 1953, attended the event and signed the treaty with Randall Garrison.

Randall Garrison, MP for Esquimalt-Saanich-Sooke, is concerned that the doomsday clock was set to two-minutes to midnight in January 2018, yet the Liberal Government has taken no action to protect Canadians from nuclear war. “Canada took a leadership role through the UN in the fight to eradicate landmines, and we have seen how successful that movement has been and how many lives it has saved around the world,” Garrison says. “As tensions are rising around the world, Canada is well placed to take a leadership role in the high-stakes movement for nuclear disarmament. We need to take a new approach that seeks to de-escalate and work towards disarmament. New Democrats believe that doing nothing to prevent nuclear war is no longer an option, and we are calling on the Liberal Government to be brave and step forward to protect people around the world from the horrors of nuclear weapons.”

As the Vice-Chair of the House of Commons Standing Committee on National Defence and the NDP’s National Defence Critic, Randall Garrison has stated that the Liberal Government’s silence on the issue of nuclear weapons is putting Canadians, and people around the world, in grave danger.

Peace activists Dr. Mary-Wynne Ashford, Dr. Jonathan Downs and Esquimalt High students Lia Rozenbloom Holla and Magritte Gordaneer gave presentations on the risks and horrors of nuclear war as well as the potential for disarmament and the need for Canadians to take up the fight against nuclear weapons. They were accompanied by choral interludes performed by the Gettin’ Higher Choir.

Following the presentations, Randall Garrison and religious and community leaders signed the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, after which the approximately 150 attendees also signed the treaty to signal their support for this historic, legally-binding treaty.
