MP GARRISON TO KINDER MORGAN PROTESTORS: THIS PIPELINE SHOULD NEVER HAVE BEEN APPROVED

SAANICH, BC – Over two-hundred protestors arrived at MP Randall Garrison’s community office in Saanich to voice their opposition to the Kinder Morgan pipeline project, a position that Randall Garrison shares.

Speaking to the large crowd assembled in front of  his community office, Randall Garrison said, “Kinder Morgan should never have been approved. The seven-fold increase in tanker traffic through our waters is not something that we can accept. One spill could destroy traditional food and ceremonial fisheries of four First Nations and tens of thousands of jobs in recreational fishing, tourism, and whale watching that depend on the clean environment.”

Randall Garrison has maintained that a fifteen percent spill recovery and a spill response time of six hours, the current standard in Esquimalt-Saanich-Sooke, is unacceptable. He has opposed the Kinder Morgan pipeline and advocated for coastal protection since his time on Esquimalt council.

The protestors, responding to an indigenous-led Kinder Morgan resistance movements call-to-action, gave speeches, sang and displayed signs as a part of a national day of action to defend the water.

Despite stating, during a public event in Esquimalt during the 2015 campaign, that Kinder Morgan would undergo a new approval process, Justin Trudeau approved the project in 2016 under the same rubber-stamp system that the Conservatives used. At a town hall in Nanaimo last fall, Trudeau stated that his government’s Oceans Protection Plan was dependent on Kinder Morgan going through. Randall Garrison finds this position disturbing, especially as the Oceans Protection Plan will provide no actual improvement in spill response.

Randall Garrison finished his speech by encouraging the protestors and saying, “keep going, this pipeline will not be built.”
