It was only 23 years ago today that homosexuality was removed from the World Health Organization’s (WHO) International Classification of Diseases.

Today, on the International Day Against Homophobia, New Democrats are proud to stand in solidarity with the LGBT(Q) community here at home and abroad as we renew our commitment to speaking out against discrimination, prejudice and violence.

Bhandal wins status on humanitarian and compassionate grounds

Victoria - In response to concerns from constituents, Randall Garrison (Esquimalt-Juan de Fuca) introduced a Private Member’s Bill to restore federal environmental protection to the Goldstream River.  Garrison's bill would add the Goldstream River to Schedule 2 of the Navigable Waters Protection Act in order to protect this significant Vancouver Island river. "The bill is necessary because the Conservatives eliminated environmental protection for all streams, rivers and lakes on Vancouver Island last year in Bill C-38," Garrison noted. 

Conservatives failed three times to answer my question in House of Commons today about why the budget provides $6 m. of public money to the private Crandall University in Moncton which has a hiring policy banning employment of gays and lesbians. Either they didn't do their homework or worse the Conservatives knew and didn't care. And anyway, why is such a huge grant for infrastructure going to a private university at a time when public post-secondary infrastructure is crumbling?

Today, New Democrats are proud to have contributed to ensuring equal protection under the law from discrimination and hatred based on gender identity.

We are happy there was all party support for formal protection of Transsexual, Transgender, and Gender Variant Canadians’ rights under the Canadian Human Rights Act and the Criminal Code with Bill C-279.

We need to recognize the work of the many people and organizations across the country who worked hard to advance this important issue.
